Oh Young Minister: What It Truly Means to Be Called by God

Many young ministers today are eager to do something for God, but very few have taken time to understand what it truly means to be called by Him

A calling is not excitement.
A calling is not desire.
A calling is not a title.

If you misunderstand calling, you will build a ministry God never sent.

Jeremiah 1:5 (KJV)
“Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.”

Hebrews 5:4 (KJV)
“And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.”

A calling is a divine selection backed by divine intention. It is God choosing a man, separating him, equipping him, and sending him. A calling is not something you decide—it is something you discover and submit to. You did not call yourself. The burden you feel, the desire to serve, the hunger for impact—these may be indicators, but they are not the calling itself. The true calling originates from God’s will, purpose, and eternal agenda. Oh, young minister, if your “calling” can be turned off when things get hard, then it was never a calling—it was interest. Many people want the microphone, but they are running away from the burden. A true calling will weigh on your spirit, disturb your comfort, and demand your consecration. Before God gives you people, He gives you pressure.

Before visibility, there is formation. Jeremiah said, “I am a child,” but God had already separated him. Calling will separate you from certain friendships, worldly appetites, and casual Christianity. You cannot carry what is sacred with a casual life. Oh young minister, if nothing in your life has changed, then you have not responded to the call. A calling is not a badge—it is a weight. You become responsible for souls, doctrine, and the representation of Christ. This is why many who rush into ministry collapse—they encountered responsibility without preparation. Even when God calls a man, He still takes him through process. Moses was called, then sent to the wilderness.

David was anointed, then sent back to sheep.
Paul was called, then hidden for years. Calling without process produces pride, error, and instability. Oh young minister, do not mistake desire for calling. Do not enter ministry because you can preach, you are gifted, or people affirm you. Many are speaking, but few are sent. And when you are not sent, you will struggle to sustain what you started. Seek God for clarity, not opportunity.
Build intimacy before visibility.
Submit to spiritual authority.

Allow God to process you before presenting you. God is not looking for available men—He is looking for prepared vessels. Your calling is too sacred to be rushed.
It must be understood, formed, and aligned with heaven.

If this message has spoken to you, then my book “Oh Young Minister” is a deeper, more detailed guide to help you avoid costly mistakes and grow with clarity.
